| A significant section of most
yearbooks is the pages which include photographs of the graduating class.
The standard "formally posed head shot" gives way on occasion to
variations, like group shots or candid photos.
Most often, the books are produced by upper class undergraduates, who may
acknowledge the neophyte lower classmen in group photos or at least a
roster of all students and year of anticipated graduation. Rarely,
however, do yearbooks recognize members of the graduate programs at
all.
From time to time, yearbooks double as autograph albums. When the trend is very popular, the design of the book may even formally acknowledge this function by providing pages for that purpose. Only a small number of yearbooks in the Illinois Institute of Technology Archives collection include original signatures even though many of the books have come back to us from alumni. Can you suggest an explanation for that phenomenon? |
